We have always been infatuated by urban farming. I lived in NYC for over a decade. The upper west side was a hotbed of individual independent growers. There were small public gardens and plenty of the balcony variety. Friends in the concrete jungle had garden fresh salads all summer! Space and location really do not have to be constraints.
Homer Soil & Water Conservation – I stumbled into these folks and was pleasantly surprised at the wealth of knowledge they have assembled. From countless interviews, they generated two comprehensive PDF’s on growers and buyers in Homer. These two PDF’s kick started our research effort. While the details pertain to Homer, there are common threads likely common in any small town local food effort.
* Best cash back deal still available – The NRCS (Natural Resource Conservation Service) has a program to provide high tunnel financial and technical assistance to agricultural growers. Here are two helpful links: EQIP Program and Alaska NRCS.
Joel Salatin is a wealth of larger scale farming knowledge. He is also one of the first to publicize leased land farming.
*Great book – Get to know Curtis Stone’s urban farming principles . He has an excellent book called The Urban Farmer and a wealth of YouTube videos. A helpful beginner video is his THIS IS HOW MY FARM WORKS! You quickly realize that even starting a quarter acre farm does not have to break the bank. He extends his growing capacity with leased land.
WWOOF is a worldwide organization that pairs growers with volunteer workers. They put in approximately 30 hour weeks in exchange for some farming know how and free room/board.
* Great game – Agricola is rated as one of the best strategy board games of all time. AND… it’s about farming! We are no pros at this game but can attest that it is addictive. It can also seem complicated at first glance. It helped us to watch a few beginner YouTube videos.
