Our Ship Is Coming In (literally)

Admin · September 15, 2020 · Leave a Comment

We are finally getting our Premier1 electric fence supplies and the Farmers Friend high tunnel late this week. Both orders will be shipped into the Kenai Port for pickup in Soldotna. All said, there will be a 1500 lb 8 foot pallet and six large boxes that weigh approximately 60 lbs each.

Nothing ever goes as planned. Our high tunnel and irrigation supplies were all supposed to be shipped on one large pallet. Instead two end door accessories that we ordered were coming from different locations and were shipped separately. We ended up with a pallet and three extra boxes. Our original shipping estimate (for both orders) came in at $462.57. Our actual cost will be $580.81. Not too bad. American Fast Freight has been super helpful and easy to deal with. Farmers Friend was swamped with orders (along with ours) and bent over backwards to get our order shipped within the 1 month freight forwarding quote window.

We are not planting anything for production this year but will put some garlic and spinach out for a small late season crop. We are also going to put a Hairy Vetch cover crop in the high tunnel for the winter. Next Spring will get busy.

Making progress getting the high tunnel plot ready.

Homer Stuff

One of the toys (a powered paraglider) from the Lonian mega yacht that was anchored off the Spit.

Tourism is winding down quickly now. The Lonian and her support ship have both left. The camping and RV sites are clearing out. We took the dogs down to the Spit today for one of their daily walks. Only saw a few people and no other dogs. It’s a great time to vacation on the Spit!

A de Havilland DHC-3 Otter arrives to the Spit by ferry.

Probably would have been easier to fly this Otter in but they must have had their reasons. These Otters are quintessential Alaskan planes. The DHC-2 Beavers are the classic bush planes. The Otter is a slightly bigger version of the Beaver.

The Otter was delicately lifted off the ferry and parked on land.
The fishing vessel Stormbird.

We always enjoy seeing the Stormbird come back to the Spit. It is captained by Capt. Fish. If you have ever seen Johnny Depp in Pirates of the Caribbean, then you have an idea of what Capt. Fish looks like. Only he has far more chains on his boots, waist, neck, and hat. His crew looks like they stepped off the movie set as well. Someday we will get a picture of these characters.

Be well & green dreams!
