How can it be July so soon! The 4th is this weekend which means the Spit will be (even more) packed. This summer’s tourism is definitely making up for last year. It has stayed crowded ever since late May. It helps that Alaska is totally back to normal (Covid-wise). There are occasional masks to be seen but not often. The weather has been excellent. Lots of sun and high 50’s while the lower US has been baking. So basically from a local Homer perspective, things are good.
Dip netting is about to start on the Kenai on July 10. It’s a big deal up here as locals can harvest Sockeye based on household size. For myself and my wife, we are allowed 35 fish. Each Sockeye (more commonly known as Reds locally) averages 6 or 7 lbs. They have been running larger this year according to Fish and Game. At 7 lbs that is about 250 lbs of fresh salmon for the freezer and smoker!

The Kenai is the most popular spot in Alaska. The fish are generally larger and the water is accessible. People converge on the beach from all over the state. It can get crowded. Fortunately the Kenai is about an hour north of Homer which makes quick midweek trips a good way to avoid some of the masses.
