Not so sure these will be the “happiest” holidays as many folks deal with covid and its restrictions. Homer has a small population of some 5,000 year round locals which has probably helped mitigate the effects of the virus here. We feel for communities in lockdown hotspots like NY, CA, and the UK.
Yeti 6000x Power Station
We ordered a Yeti 6000x power station which has turned into a bit of a fiasco. We ordered directly from Goal Zero who after several weeks informed us that they will not ship to Alaska. There is only one distributor on the Kenai Peninsula – Sportsman Warehouse. Their corporate buyer confirmed that they can get the 6000x but not until it is added to their website which will be sometime in January.
We checked out an alternative system at Susitna Energy in Anchorage. They recommended the following core components:
- Xantrex Freedom XC 2000 watt inverter
- Battle Born deep cycle 12v battery
- Midnight Solar Kid charge controller
The cost is similar to the Yeti but a whole lot less compact. We would have to jury rig a cart or hand truck to move it around. We decided to put up with the Yeti complications and purchase it through Sportsman Warehouse.
Polyface Designs Book
We lined up for this book from Joel Salatin back in October. They did a limited printing which sold out quickly. We missed the cutoff. The next batch will be available in late January. Our order was through Justin Rhodes (Abundant Permaculture) who continues to offer free perks to those waiting for the book. Justin mentioned a price increase after the holidays.
One of our projects for early next year will be a combo greens processing / storage shed. The book should be a good resource for ideas and building details.
