So the chicken saga continues. We originally were going with Buff Orphingtons but switched to Black Australorps. We’re still purchasing 10 hens and a rooster. If you are in the Anchorage/Kenai vicinity, there are only a few local places to get chicks. Anchorage has the Alaska Mill and Feed and Kenai has the Kenai Feed & Supply. Both are excellent stores but the Kenai Feed has the best selection of chicks. Here’s a sample of this year’s offering:
We switched to Australorps primarily due to a better delivery date. These large 8 1/2 to 10lb Australian birds come from a blend of Orpington, Leghorn, and Rhode Island Red genes. They are known as egg laying machines have set records for laying eggs 364 days in a year.
They are hardy good cold weather birds that require little in the way of special care. They have a reputation for being quiet and are not flighty. All in all, a good backyard addition!
