Chicken Drama & Tourists

Admin · May 22, 2021 · Leave a Comment

Last year we had a close call with one of our birds who came down with wry neck. We just had another bird become egg bound. This is a potentially serious condition where an egg gets stuck in their oviduct which they are unable to pass. You can feel the egg but have to be careful not to break it. If it breaks, that can lead to death.

Our bird was laying on her side and lethargic when we found her. We brought her inside to keep her quiet, hydrate her, and force feed her. Online info suggests salt baths which we tried but with no success. Another online recommendation was feeding her human calcium pills. We found a calcium/magnesium/zinc combo pill which worked. It took about four days for her to get some strength and finally pass a soupy egg that had broken down.

Around Town Stuff

The tourists are in! The Spit is finally looking like pre-Covid days. Parking is tight. Shops are open. Restaurants are busy and the RV parks are starting to fill up. Even a few tents showed up on a beach camping area.

Kayakers just off the Spit.
Exploring the Coast Guard dock.
Our favorite food stand preparing to open.
Glacier in the clouds.

Good summer!
